to the otherworldly 1988 than I would have thought. Extremely rich, with a huge,

flavors, it is a wine known for its voluptuousness and extraordinary intensity.

As I wrote in my book The Wines of the Rhone Valley, it would be a shame to go
through life without tasting this wine. Sadly, there are a number of fraudulent
bottlings (both 750ml and magnums) in the marketplace, but the real thing is one of
the most phenomenally stuffed wines ever made. Dark ruby/purple-colored, with an
over-ripe nose of black cherry jam, kirsch liqueur, raspberries and minerals,
this exceptionally full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape boasts layers of concentration,
glycerin, and alcohol (in excess of 15%). The massive alcohol is well-concealed by
the wine's spectacular extract and density. Low in acidity and unbelievably sumptuous,
it is ideal for consuming now and over the next 10-15+ years. The quintessential Rayas,
it is one of the most hedonistic and compelling wines ever made.

An opaque purple color and a closed but exciting nose of truffles, minerals,
Asian spices, and fruitcake. When the wine hits the mouth with its enormous
weight and extraction of flavor, one can't help but be seduced by such enormous
richness and purity. Nevertheless, there is still a remarkably high level of
tannin (sweet rather than astringent), a youthful, unevolved fruit character,
and flavors that stain the palate. After tasting this wine, one feels like brushing
one's teeth ... it is that rich. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2030. Last tasted 7/96.

Among so many exceptional La Mouline's, this is one of the most profound.
At the same time, it is atypically backward, and has been slow to evolve.
Still dark purple-colored, with only a hint of the flamboyant Mouline aromatics,
this thick, super concentrated, full-bodied, tannic La Mouline is loaded
with fruit, massive, and full-bodied, but still in need of time to fully shed
its cloak of tannin. It is likely to be the longest-lived La Mouline since

The great glories of this house are its Cote Roties, of which there are now five
separate offerings. The single-vineyard 1994s were singing loudly when I saw them
in July. All of them scored significantly higher than they did during the two
previous years, which is not unusual as Guigal's upbringing (elevage) of the wines
results in better examples in the bottle than in cask. All three wines flirt with
a perfect score. At this tasting, they reminded me of Guigal's 1982s - opulent,
sumptuously-textured, forward, rich, precocious, flattering wines that will drink
well throughout their lives. The exotic 1994 Cote Rotie La Turque exhibits a dense
purple color, and a fabulously-scented nose of licorice, Asian spices, truffles,
minerals, and gobs of black fruits. Full-bodied, with great richness, a multi-layered
personality, and an exotic, overripe character, this is a sensational, chocolatey,
rich wine with more tannin than La Mouline. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020. Guigal
is one of the cellars where the wines always taste better after they are bottled than
they do from cask, although as the scores in this segment indicate, some profound
wines can be found in the 1994, 1995, and 1996 vintages Chez Guigal.

The 1992 Petrus is clearly one of the two candidates for the "wine of the
vintage." The normal production of 4,500 cases was severely reduced to only
2,600 cases, resulting in an atypically concentrated, powerful, rich wine
with a dark, saturated ruby/purple color, a tight but promising nose of sweet
black-cherry fruit, vanillin, caramel, and herb-tinged mocha notes.
Concentrated and powerful, with superb density of fruit and richness, as well
as wonderful sweetness to its tannin, this is a brilliant effort for the
vintage. The wine requires 3-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15-20+.

Dazzling since birth, the 1995 has not lost a thing since bottling. A saturated
dark purple color suggests a wine of considerable depth and concentration.
The nose offers up gorgeous aromas of sweet kirsch intermixed with black raspberry,
mineral, and smoky notes. Full-bodied, with superb richness and purity, loads of
tannin, and a layered, multidimensional personality, this terrific La Fleur-Petrus
is the finest wine I have tasted at this property in the twenty years I have been
visiting Bordeaux. Readers may remember that I previously reported that a 10-acre
old vine sector of Le Gay was sold to La Fleur-Petrus, increasing the latter's vineyard
to 33 acres. I believe this 10-acre acquisition has beefed up La Fleur-Petrus, a fact
particularly evident in this 1995. It is a splendid effort!
Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.

I am certainly not going to argue with anyone who believes La Mission-Haut-Brion's 1989
is every bit as profound as the 1989 Haut-Brion. It is a spectacular wine, and as it ages
in the bottle, it is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite La Mission-Haut-Brions,
ranking alongside the 1982, 1975, 1961, 1959, and 1955. The 1989 boasts a dense, thick,
purple color, followed by a sweet, roasted cassis, chocolatey-scented nose with whiffs of
tobacco, tar, and minerals. The wine is extremely full-bodied, unctuously-textured, sweet,
jammy, and rich. Although it is still a youthful, unformed wine, it is already delicious
to drink. It should develop additional bottle bouquet by the turn of the century, after
which it will drink well for 15-20 years. Last tasted 11/96
